Tried and Tested Tips and Tricks for DIY AC Maintenance
You have no idea how stressful it can get when you have a dysfunctional air conditioning unit, especially during the summer or winter months when the AC must be working at its optimal. The good news is that there are some super cool and easy AC maintenance tips and hacks that will ensure your AC unit is as functional as it can ever get. Here are some of the basic maintenance tips to get you started on a functional and effective air conditioning unit throughout the year.
For starters, you might want to ensure you are dealing with a clean air conditioning unit so make sure you are cleaning it on a regular basis. Keeping the AC clean is as simple as removing the fan cage on the exterior unit and thoroughly cleaning the fins. Once you have access to the fins, you can then use a soft bristled vacuum or even clean using your hands. Should you encounter very stubborn dirt, you can introduce readily available fin sprays to help dislodge the dirt and make it easy to clean. It is important that you also straighten the fins when cleaning them. This ensures the amount and quality of air flowing through the fins is at its optimal.
It is also highly recommended that you have the blower air filters changed twice a year. Blower filters are best changed before winter and before summer kicks in. Just a quick tip here is to ensure the filter you use has the same airflow rating as the one you are removing. You will know your condensate drain tube needs to be checked when you notice a pool of water on the furnace when the AC is running.
Note that this condensation from the Air conditioner coils will accumulate bacteria over time, leading to the formation of slime. Now, when slime comes into the picture, it means the pan drain tube will be compromised, and your unit will not function properly. The next important part of your AC that needs to be maintained and cleaned on a regular basis is the evaporator coil which is found on the inside of the AC furnace. All you need to do unscrew it from the coil door, and you can then use a soft brush to get rid of the dust piled up. Do not forget to clean the drain pan while in the process, which you do by adding some bleach on warm, soapy water. If you follow these tips, you are sure of having a functional AC whose durability will not be compromised.
